This guy has the tools, he seems way ahead of where Dre and Hartline were as SOPHOMORES, let alone as freshmen.
Ever since STATE came in and took the legs out from underneath a promising football season I've been thinking a lot about the state of UK football. I feel like were at a crossroads as Papaw Brooks reaches the end of his run as UKs coach.
Rushing the field after this win is as fond a UK memory for me as when I celebrated our 6th and 7th championships.
Lets make no mistake about it, CRB is a hero to this University, and dont let any haters say otherwise. I know UK football hasnt become a powerhouse under his direction, but we have become a school that can hold its head up when other fans start talking college football. Things havent always been perfect, the first few years were brutal, and even in this 4 year run of respectability its never as satisfying as you want it to be. The formula for the successful CRB team is as follows, you will beat all the out of conference teams that dont have SEC talent, you will give an SEC opponent you arent expected to beat a real scare and then fall short, you will upset one SEC team that you werent supposed to beat, and you will lose at least one toss up game that you need come bowl season. Make no bones that the last 3 and a half years have been way better than we are used to, but things are changing. Which is why I wonder if Joker Phillips is the right choice to take over the reigns when Papaw hangs it up in the next 2 years.
This guy will do a good job, but the question is will just good be enough for the future of UK football?Dont get me wrong, Joker will keep the staus quo if he remains coach, or at least keep it very close. I think that recruiting will be better under Phillips however I think the general principles and philosophies will remain, and I think that will hold UK back. UK raised its level of play to try and dig out a niche in the SEC a few years ago, the thing is that the conference has taken another step up. Arkansas and STATE are going to be real players in the SEC in the future by my estimation, and Vandy is trying to make a move. I know Vandy has struggled this year, but they have a team that Im not sure we are gonna be able to beat next Saturday. With the SEC brand as hot as its ever been I wonder if UK shouldnt check around the country for a fiery offensive cordinator whos at a big school but is ready for a head coaching job. UK does play in the SEC and the football team does recieve support from the fans and higher ups so maybe we could attract someone. Do I know who Im talking about? No, but maybe there is someone out there, it looks like the strategy is going to work out for STATE.
This guy is a stud, but he cant do it alone. At the end of the day I understand that it all boils down to talent, and we just dont have enough. We always have talented players, like a Kennan Burton, or Andre Woodson, or Randall Cobb, but we never have enough to compete week in and week out. However if we would be more daring I think we could make more waves than what we have. Next year we will have a solid offense behind Newton, Cobb, and Locke, but we will have to utilize them in ways that maximize them and hide our flaws. We cant rely so heavily on the pro style Joker likes, although Newton will have the arm to make plays more so than Hartline has the last two years, we still need a heavier dose of the Wildcat with Cobb and Locke in the backfield. Hell try the triple option with Newton under center, more split back sets to utilize our speed. In my opinion the only way we can get to 8 or 9 wins in the regular season is if we are the most daring team in the league. We are not going to be able to line up and go straight at most of the teams in the SEC without a mighty boom in recruiting, but thats what we always try to do. Mix that in with very conservative play calling and you get the holding pattern we are in right now. Its enough to keep us respectable, but how long before that gets stale to the Wildcat faithful?
